Recently we started to carry some very interesting Non-Jewish recordings. One
of these is "Echoes From Afar- Old World Tangos Vol 1".

The selections were recorded in Rumania, Turkey, Russia (Pjotr Leschenko),
Greece, Egypt (Farid el Atrache & sister Asmahan), and Algeria (by the great
Jewish singer, Lili Boniche ) in the late 20's through the late 30's and
possibly early 40's.

Though the music is definitely not Jewish, there are references to Jewish
Musicians in general, and their influence of Tango, especially on the Turkish
Tango recordings from the 30's and 40's that we will soon be carrying in the
store.

Other recordings that we now carry included the great Maria Tanase from
Rumania, and Rumanian singer "Sofia - Bukovina Songs" .

Again, these are NOT Jewish recordings, but the enclosed booklet makes note
of the Jewish & Gypsy influence of this music. We will be getting some great
Turkish Tango Cds from the 30's soon. Jewish European musicians were largely
responsible for popularizing Tango in Turkey.

I don't know if this is of interest to anyone on the list or even belongs
here. We will be getting more of this kind of music and if anyone is
interested, let me know and I can make a separate list for those who want to
be informed.

Many of these recordings were reviewed in the current issue of Sing Out
Magazine by Seth Rogovoy and we did take out a full page add in the same
issue featuring these and some very unique Jewish CDs.

Thank You
Simon
