Computer gibberish

I get the ListServ (is that the correct word?) in the daily digest form. 
The first half (or more) of the most recent consisted of a tremendous 
amount of computer gibberish - letters and numbers not separated into 
words.  Is that a flaw on the part of the server, or of the receiving 
computer?  Even then, the rest has the messages mixed with a fair amount 
of special characters and other flotsam.  (Although no jetsam to report at 
the moment.)
