RE: The golden Peacock/Goldene Pave

Helen,

I am interested in the same information as well. I've been able to trace
references to the "goldene pave" back to the middle of the 18th century. It
was not specifically related to Yiddish culture at that time but it was
generally conceded as being eastern European in origin. It was adopted as a
Yiddish folk symbol later? I don't know maybe it was always Yiddish.

It was has been used mostly to allude to a feeling of longing in most
instances.

Specific Yiddish refences can be tracked to Ginsberg/Marek folk anthology of
the same title in 1906. Halper's work in 1924 and Itzik Manger about the
same time in a great song (Different than the Margolin poem set to music by
the Klezmatics and Alberstein).

If anyone can enlighten me more I would greatly appreciate it.
