I just got a 1959 Bruno LP, "Yiddish Songs and Dances from Eastern
Europe, vol. 2." This company bootlegged a lot of Eastern European
labels, like Electrecord, Melodiya, Balkanton, etc. This records
includes some completely non-Jewish Ukrainian and Romanian
instrumental recordings, plus one possibly intentionally Jewish
instrumental, "Freilach Dance" by one "Folk Orchestra of Kishyniev"
(which not unlikely actually was recorded in that city, though
titles and credits on this label are always open to question), and
several Yiddish songs, with piano accompaniment, sung in high-art
style by Emil Horowitz. Does anyone know anything about Emil
Horowitz, such as where he lived? Were they making Yiddish recordings
in the 1950s in the U.S.S.R., or is this (as seems more likely)
Romanian?
