Judy, Thanks for your support and grasp of the bigger picture to establish
unity among all the Jewish artists, especially the women. When someone sends
me a CD or tape I never ask them what their religious affiliations are. That
is not what it's about, whether someone is Reform,Conservative,Orthodox etc..
They are singing their hearts out to G-d and their music is beautiful. That
is what counts.
My Rebbe and dear friend Shlomo Carlebach ztl used to reflect on some
focusing questions, Where are you coming from?(are your intentions from a
holy place?). What do Jews need now, today, not 200 years ago? He was
always concerned about CONNECTING JEWS, connecting the world, fixing the
world, tikkun ha olom. These questions are always in the back of my mind.
Every time we DJ's go on the mic, it is an opportunity to sanctify G-d's name.
In addition to being the "Rockin' Rebbetzin" I am also a Jewish Mother. I am
now the Jewish mother to all the kids at the radio station always bringing in
food and listening to everyone's problems. I am also the Jewish mother who
kvels and sheps nachas when all the artists on my play list have new releases
and concerts. I kvel from their successes and try to promote their concerts
and gigs on the radio and network for them whenever possible..(Reb Shlomo
used to say in the name of the Rebbe of the Holy Hunchback,,, The greatest
mitzvah in the world is to do someone a favor!)
I'm not sure that everyone on the list knows, but I have released a
compilation CD of my Radio program Rockin' Rebbetzin, The Kol Isha Show. I
would publicly like to thank Winston Wilheimer for playing the CD on his show
and making it the CD of the week. Thank you so much, you are a gevalt!. The
CD is kind of like a chulent. There is a wide variety on the music and
styles of the artists. I enjoyed bringing them all together into one
compilation. and would love to bring them all together in person for a
musical jam some time in the future.
Some of the artists on the CD are very observant and sing only for women
audiences. This is their personal choice and they are proud of it. They are
well aware that this choice is not easy and limiting in the music world and
struggle to do the best they can. They appreciate all the help they can get!
As a clinical social worker by profession, and inherently a rebel rouser,
I tend to be one of those people who like to "push open the cracks in the
door" and sometimes end up putting myself out on a limb. Nontheless, whenever
I could help any of the artists out there network and or get gigs I am happy
to do so.
To respond to a recent post. I think the the name of the orthodox Harpist
for the Orthodox Band Tofa'ah is Sunita Stanislow or something close to that.
For those of you who are either interested or curious, the artists who were
most gracious to participate in my CD are Susan Kates from Rannanna Israel,
Ashira, from Israel, Shari Sofair from Monsey NY, Tofa'ah Band from Jerusalem
Israel, Ruthy Muller from LA California,TirtzaSinger from Ramot Beit Israel,
Tsufit from Toronto Canada, Miriam Mandelkern (Sandler) formerly from
Hollywood Fla., now in Passaic NJ, Basya Schechter from NYC, Debbie Friedman
from NYC, Hanna Tiferet from MA.
There were other artists as well who were invited but either declined or were
unable to be contacted at the time the CD was being put together. Well,
perhaps, G-d willing, their songs can be on Vol.2.
Wishing everyone best of success in their endeavors. Hope you will listen in
to my show on Friday Mornings 8:45-10:00 am E.S.T www.wsia.fm 88.9FM on
your dial in the NY metropolitan area and spread a good word about the CD.
Thanks again.
