The string players in my group, The Revolution Ensemble, use an AKG C411
clip on (well actually it doesn't clip on--it uses a non-damaging stick on
substance). It's very small and ultra-light weight, but since it doesn't use
an XLR output, we use a MicroMic 2 Phantom Power adapter. The combination
works quite well as long you have an engineer who knows how to set the EQ to
keep the tone from sounding strident. I think the combination will set you
back about $200, maybe a little more.
