tribute to Dave Tarras by Dave Douglas

On jazz trumpeter/composer Dave DOuglas's new album, "A Thousand Evenings"
(RCA/BMG), there is a stirring, frenzied, two-part tribute to Dave Tarras
called "The Branches," performed by his Charms of the Night Sky ensemble
(which features violinist Mark Feldman, accordionist Guy Klucevsek and
Douglas's Masada bandmate, bassist Greg Cohen).

The piece, one of the most "experimental" on the album, was commissioned by
the Ashkenaz Festival of Yiddish Culture and first performed in Sept. 1999.

Interestingly, in the liner notes, Douglas writes of the piece, "It is
dedicated to Yiddish-American clarinetist/composer Dave Tarras, who, on
moving to America in 1921, pioneered an entirely new genre of music."

Note the absence of the word "klezmer."

Douglas is generally regarded as the leading innovator on his instrument,
and perennially tops reader and critics polls in the mainstream jazz press.
