Re: Rom in Austria and Germany

I tried one of those translation programs on this article. Below is the
passage in German and then the English. Maybe someone on the list can help
with this.
Helen

(Reisende 172).

I'd translate it as follows:

But someone has to do it - someone has to document it. Every ethnic group
has something to say, for instance, abou how things happened, say 200 years
ago. But we know very little about the history of the Roma or the Sinti of
the past 200 years. Their old culture is almost unknown. It's imperative
that someone in the present day steps out and says, "It doesn't matter what
you feel. The important thing is, that (history) is documented, so that
someone at some point, maybe in 100 years, can have something to look back
on. It should be visible in the Austrian media. We're also bound to this
country historically. We were needed for many things...for hundreds of
years, but not on person knows anything about these people.

If anyone is interested, more information can be gotten about Gypsies in
eastern Europe through the European Roma Rights Center
(ERRC):100263(dot)1126 (at) compuserve(dot)com

they published a monohraph in 1996 in English, called "Divide and Deport -
Roma & Sinti in Austria, which is a very disturbing documentation of the
political oppression of Gypsies by the Austrian government and police. If
more information is wanted, you can also contact an American friend in
Budapest whoc works for the ERRC, Claude Cahn: cahncl (at)
