Re: demand for "authentic" ethnic



Although I don't know why the world wants the authentic stuff now, I do have 
an interesting article (sent to me by a member of this list) from The Jewish 
Folklore and Ethnology Newsletter Vol 8 No. 3-4 1986 by Ayalah Goren that 
explains the "melting pot" philosophy in Israel.  That is as immigrant 
groups entered the country, they were encouraged to integrate "selected 
elements" of their  dance culture into the larger Israeli dance culture.  By 
doing this, the original meaning and nuances were lost in the shuffle and 
only select groups still maintain the original.
It makes it very hard to find authentic material at least in the dance area.
