The album is called _Shaindele Sings the Songs of her People_, M 613,
Orchestra and Chorus, Conducted by Abraham Ellstein, who had his hand in
all Yiddish music, it seems, for many decades. It is from Margot Records,
at the time located at 242 W.36th St. NY, 18, NY, tel: 212-LO-3-3670. It
was produced by Daniel Sloan, English narration by Zvee Schooler, who was
the voice of the "Gramm Meister" on the Jewish Forward Hour. Arrangements
by Abraham Ellstein. Miss Pearl Williams was Shaindele's manager at 170
Second Avenue in NYC, tel: 212 GR-7-3289. I include the obsolete details
for historical interest.
The pieces are ROCHEL M'VAKOH AL BONEHO (David Roitman), 7:30; MEIN
STAITELE (Ellstein-Lillian) Metro Music, 5:30; TIHAIR RABBI YISHMAEL (Zavel
Kwartin [the FAMOUS cantor]), 6:33; (side 2) ANNENU (Mordecai Hershman),
7:40; ELI ELI (Traditional), 5:00; and AV HORACHAMIM (Mordecai Hershman),
7:22.
I'm guessing, by the hair, clothing, album style, and other recording
information that it was recorded around 1955-57. I have no clue as to
where this might be available now, so if you find this or something else by
her, I would love to know. My father used to tell me about her and her
extraordinary voice, listening to her on the Jewish/Yiddish radio stations
at home as a child and how she would fill the Atlantic City venues with
followers in the years of its heyday (pre-casino), so I was thrilled when I
found this album.
Does anyone know what the law is about recording an old album like this to
share it with others?
