RE: What is Jewish Music? (And much more)

George,

I think starting a journal for Yiddish music is a fabulous idea. Let me
suggest that you begin to talk to the following people about this: Mark
Slobin of Wesleyan U., Zev Feldman of U. of Penn., Dr. Itskik Leyb/Jeffrey
Wollock, Dr. Mark Kligman of HUC, some people at JTS's cantorial school (we
don't have time to make a complete list now.) I spoke to Itsik Leyb about
this last year, but he was too busy writing a book at the time. Anyway, if
getting a printed journal is too difficult, getting a web site where people
would upload the articles they have already published about Jewish music
would be very easy. Much great stuff has already been published, but
because it is dispersed in scores of different academic, esoteric or small
journals, few people have access to them. You could add all of your
articles, and if Jewish Week says no then you could put them on their site
and links to them would be established. Such a site would make this rich
material accessible to everyone and inspire new articles all the time. I
have also spoken to Ari about making place for something like that on his
web site, but actually many universities would be amenable to holding such
large files.

Finally, I see you haven't read all the mail.

>Why do we want to claim Julio Iglesias and Mariah Carey in the first
place?
>Isn't embarrassing enough to have given the world Barry Manilow?

I am not a fan of Iglesias or Manilow and can't stand Mariah Carey and
asking if they are Jewish doesn't make one.

As for accordion music, you left out French (and Cajun) music - the only
time I love accordion.

>Finally, a question for Reyzl -- "Music for Jewish affairs?" What, now you
gotta
>have music to have an affair? A hotel room with a bed isn't enough? Oy,
only
>the Jews. . . .

Cute!! So what kind of music they play at your family's simkhas?

Reyzl
