Klezmer Mariachi

Sorry for the poor wording of my earlier posting which might have given the
impression that I am
part of the performing ensemble in the klezmer mariachi concert. I am merely
part of the
producing organization that came up with the idea and produced/organized the
concert. Credit for
the musical portion goes to Barry Fisher of Ellis Island and Mariachi del Sol
America. The format
for the concert was a segment by the mariachi band, both vocal and
instrumental, followed by a
mariachi/klezmer rendition of a mariachi tune, and more mariachi. The second
half of the concert
featured the Ellis Island Klezmer Band who were then joined by the mariachi
folks for a
klezmer/mariachi rendition of a klezmer tune. The finale was a face off/joint
rendition of
Guadalejara and Rumania,Rumania. Instrumentation (and here my recollection is
a little hazy,
enshuldik mir)was a full mariachi line-up of guitars, bass guitar, Mexican folk
harp, violins and
trumpets and a klezmer ensemble of clarinet, violin, accordion, drums and bass
(I think). It was
a raucuous good time and the music combined surprisingly well. It wasn't a
true fusion (i.e.,
some new and wonderous third kind of music never heard before), but rather
mariachi w/a klezmer
flavor and klezmer with a mariachi sound. Zayere geschmacht.
