RE: Klezmer summer workshops

Hi, in response to Ernie's question - I haven't made a programme yet, but will
certainly try to take people's expressed interests into account. About
instruments - they're not very central to Judeo-Spanish song. In fact, not
particularly important at all
Much of the repertoire was traditionally sung by women, more while doing
domestic tasks than with time to practice neat licks. They were great on
hand-percussion, though. Otherwise, in the Ottoman area, the small ensemble
known as chalgi often played for
weddings etc - local Turkish and Greek instruments. Violin could be there, oud,
whatever was around - played (mostly) by the men (though girls inearly
20th century Istanbul took mandoline & sometimes oud lessons.) For the more
commonly known repertoire made popular by Yehoram Gaon et al. - well, almost
anything goes, and for the early-music-style crowd, anything "early". But
really, the true primary
instrument for Judeo-Spanish songs is the voice.
