RE: Klezmer in corporate hands?

I just started a new mailing list for children of Holocaust survivors and God
knows how I will be able to survive life after that. As if I wasn't busy
enough before.

Have still much to say about those threads. I created a new folder of all the
interesting things said in the last 3 weeks that I want to read over (not just
scan) and respond to. Hope I get a chance to do that.

It was good seeing you. Really sorry that we didn't get a chance to talk at
Klezkamp. You know I can't walk 10 feet there without greeting at least 5
friends. So many people to talk to, so much to do.... So another time,
Owen.

Klezkamp was good. But I did hope that Chava Alberstein would hang around and
talk. We said that to each other when we saw her in NY two months ago. It
didn't work out. I expected certain things to happen which didn't happen, and
so I was disappointed. Certain extraordinary musicians who were there last
year were not there this year. Didn't get to dance as much as I wanted (my
fault). Too much to go to, too much to do. But it was great to be with so
many friends. I think that that's why a lot of people go. It was also great
to sit and get acquainted with people and their spouses that I have had only a
professional relationship with. Josh got some someone to write a beautiful
new Yiddish song from a text of Beyla Gottesman, who was also in his Song
Writing class. Zalmen Mlotek's beautiful arrangement (in what had to be a
matter of hours) made it a truly wonderful performance at the last concert.
Meeting/hearing some of new teen musicians was truly terrific. They are
really, really amazingly fabulous, especially the 14 year old fiddler. I am
sorry I can't remember his name. One of the other teens wound up being one of
son's campers when he was a CIT at Camp Ramah a few years ago. What a small
world, we both said to each other. Fruit late at night is a great idea, but
allowing smoking at the bar isn't. If you open up the door to air that
section out, you freeze everyone to death. Food is too good and we all eat
too much (my fault). The memorial to Meir Noy was very moving. Sal has a lot
of good things to sell. Even found a Yiddish record with dirty songs (don't
know such a repertoire.) Being away from my computer was a true vacation.
But our car's transmission dying a second time in 4 months was no laughing
matter. (The same thing happened to us upon leaving Klezkanada - we're
beginning to think that these festivals are car jinx.) The car is still in
repair somewhere up there and will cost about $1500 even with the 25% discount
with our NY Times card.

How is that for a report?

Reyzl,

I'm glad to see you picking up the threads. I'm sorry that we didn't get a
better chance to talk last week: what a whirlwind! I'm only just coming down
to earth now. I hope people on this list will have things to say
about all that transpired at Klez Kamp 98.
 Owen
