Re: Help with an intro to klezmer

If you liked the"The Fool And The Flying Ship", you might try other recordings
by "The Klezmer Conservatory Band"-who supplied the music for that recording.
Most of the selections on their recordings are "very fast and peppy". They
include a lot of vocals in Yiddish-check out their version of "Roumania,
Roumania".

"The Machaya Klezmer Band" has an excellent recording with mostly "fast"
tunes. This is a great CD with a very nice version of (the over done) Bei Mir
Bustu Shein. This is our #1 Klezmer recording for over a year!

A nice compilation of contemporary bands is "Klezmania" that features the "New
Orleans Klezmer All-Stars", "The Klezmatics", "Don Byron", "Aufwind" and many
others.-very peppy and fun.

If you're looking for vintage recordings, there is a Cd, "Klezmer Music ; Early
Yiddish Instrumentals 1908-1927 that includes about half of the tunes that you
know from the cassette of the similar name. The CD has many more selections
than the old cassette.

Other vintage recordings that are excellent: "Yikhes" - assorted artists
;anything by Dave Tarras especially the CD called "Yiddish American Klezmer
Music 1925-1956"; and the excellent recording by Naftule Brandwein.

Will be glad to answer any questions you minght have. Check out Ari's Klezmer
Shack to get reviews of all of the best of Klezmer.
