To the informative comments by LSalvay and Moshe Denburg, I can reccomend a 
short article by Pinchas Spiro called "Israel Goldfarb's Shalom Alechem" in 
the Journal of Synagogue Music, Dec. 1986.  The article includes a letter 
written by Goldfarb which explains under what circumstances the song was 
written, and the music of first published (not as sung today).
