Rachelle,
I've got lots of stuff that's never been recorded and one tape that has. I
have a friend in Cincinnatti who recorded the first tape for me, and I'm
trying to get another collection together to do another one. Thing is - I'm
not a singer. I can perform beautifully in Debbie's chorale - since I'm
doing it with 300 other people - but I just don't have the pipes to perfom
myself. If you come to CAJE, I'd be more than glad to share whatever you're
interested in with you. I guess I really SHOULD hone my theory skills and
start annotating my stuff. Thank you for the interest, in any case. Just
FYI - my particular Rosh Chodesh song is the "yechadshehu" set to a melody
of my own. I used it when I attended women's Rosh Chodesh services in Des
Moines when I lived there.
One of the frustrating things about not being a singer is the fact that it
takes a LONG time for my music to get any attention so that it can be used
in the manner that I want it to be used. The tape that was recorded was a
collection of 11 teaching songs. Most music curricula serve as
reinforcements for material that the kids are learning in school. My music
curriculum works in quite the other direction. The song is used as the
jumping off place for teaching the material, and there is enough information
in each song that even if you JUST teach the song, the children will have
learned something from it. There are many songs out there that can be used
in this manner, and I'd love to be able to write up a teachers' guide
similar to the one I wrote up for my own music to a collection of already
existing and known songs. E.g., the song that got me thinking in this
direction at all was Jeff Klepper's "Jonah" song. I acknowledge this in the
teachers' guide that I wrote for my music and told Jeff about this a couple
of years ago when Kol Beseder appeared in Des Moines. Thanks again, Jeff.
You started something here.
SO - maybe this is a good thing for the list to think about. What songs do
you know/have/can suggest that can be used in this manner? Better yet - how
on EARTH can I get teachers and principals to see the value in this and make
room and time for kids to be taught MATERIAL in this manner.
