funding

I would like to hear from people who have been successful getting funding
to attend Jewish workshops and conferences.  Perhaps I will be able to use
this information to help me get to next year's Hava Nashira conference.
 
- Who did you approach and how? 
 
- Are you employed by a synagogue or are any of you, like me, doing
occasional song-leading with one or more Jewish institutions along with a
variety of other teaching and performing work.  

- Should one approach the institution for conference fees, or travel, or both?
