Subject: [HANASHIR:16449] Re: Ah... the double-edged sword

a simple question...

have we gone off the subject just a tad? It's a simple, silly shabbas song
about a dinosaur for tot-shabbaters. It is not going to solve the Jewish
Music problems of the world. Its just a song for little kids to enjoy.

I understand that it is important to teach the traditional songs of our
culture and of our religion. Every time I turn around there is someone new
or not new that has a new song or tune to liturgy. I listen and decide...do
I like this song and am I able to teach this song to the kids I am teaching
(and what grades would be appropriate) and would "my" congregation like this
song.

Like I have said before...I've been around a long time. From "camp brat" to
music teacher. I love 96% of the Jewish music that is available today.
Whether its traditional or the classics. I, myself embrace it. As a
musician, I feel that comes across when I teach/perform/lead the
songs/liturgy. I have songs that I dislike or would rather not play/teach.
But, I got to tell you, if a kid comes up to me and says "Mrs. Dolin, please
play......" my heart turns to mush, I smile and play the song like it was my
favorite.

I think, when you are teaching Religious School, you need the congregation
you are working with to guide you in what you are teaching and performing.

Some of you, if not most of you don't know me. I have a Bachelors of Music
Ed and 20 plus years of teaching Jewish music behind me,

and the best advise....?

Enjoy what you sing and play...let the music come from the deepest depths of
your soul and let the heavens ring with your music, and the people will
follow....

b'shalom,

deborah dolin
