[HANASHIR:11259] Re: songs of peace

Re: [HANASHIR:11247] songs of peaceJudah,

Sholom put it well - it's about awareness. The songs that people write and
sing and listen to are as close to the "heart" of the matter as anything. When
I said I doubted that the Arabs sing songs of peace - it wasn't an "uninformed"
expression of doubt. Have you not noticed the overwhelming (and scary) wave of
anti-Semitism in the Arab world? What do you suppose we should do about it?
Go into denial...?

It's Yom HaShoah.... In Europe in the 30's there were many signs of
Anti-Semitism that came from the general population, it's wasn't just the Nazi
party and in the realm of politics. It was everywhere... and sadly, too many
Jews such as yourself dismissed the significance of these signs... and we know
their fate, and this is what today is all about. So please tell me that
Sholom's example doesn't mean anything.

It's Yom HaShoah... and we're being mindful of a huge tragedy in our past - but
can we afford to lose sight of what is happening in the present - somehow
"missing" the resemblance?

  Shirona,

Despairing and doubting, especially when you simply don't know the
information you're seeking, can only do harm and lead to animosity and vicious
rumor (see, for example, how Sholom has taken your lead. . .). Perhaps it
would be more beneficial to ask at the local mosque. Arab Americans are
currently quite keen on showing the peaceful side of their religion, and it
would seem to me that you'd find what you're looking for there.

  Judah Cohen.

    Shalom...

Going over my reference books, looking for material on Yom Ha'atzma'ut... I
realize that we must have hundreds of songs with the word "Shalom" in them. I
mean songs in Hebrew written by Israelis, wishing, yearning for peace. So I
was wondering - are there songs in Arabic expressing similar wishes...? I
don't know for sure - but I doubt it. I think this would make an interesting
"study".

    Really depressed about the situation,
