On a cheerier note, you might start with the song "Salaam" which I believe
was/is popular in summer camps. At the risk of boring everyone who knows
the tune, here are lyrics. It has two parts, is pretty easy to learn/teach,
and fairly catchy. These two parts work well together (i.e. one group sings
first part while other group sings second part). I don't know chords, but
I'm sure someone on the list does. Also, I'm not sure who to attribute the
tune to -- I learned it from Jeff Klepper.
First Part:
Od yavo shalom aleinu
Od yavo shalom aleinu
Od yavo shalom aleinu
V'al kulam
Second part:
Salaam!
Aleinu v'al kol ha-olam
Salaam... salaam...
I recommend some percussive instruments to go along with it (shakers,
bongos, etc.) The main reason I suggest this tune is because it mixes the
Arabic word for peace with Hebrew lyrics -- sort of conveys that many of us
all want the same thing.
B'shirah,
Jennifer
