Another suggestion, which also incorporates a traditional tfilah, is Adon 
Olam.  the last two lines--I give my spirit into God's hand,/when I am awake 
and when I sleep/As long as my soul is in my body/God is with me andI am not 
afraid--is comforting to kids, and  fits with starting the next day with 
modeh ani.
