Hop, mayne homentashn

Lori Simon asked about the melody of "Hop, mayne homentashn" (or
"Yakhne-Dvoshe"). Back in 1992 I wrote to MENDELE that Pirozhnikov's
text was set to the melody of the Ukrainian humorous folk song "Pishla
maty na selo" (Mother Went to the Village), the refrain of which begins
"Hop, moi hrechanyky." Hrechanyky are distant relatives of blintzes
(which are, by the way, called "mlyntsy" in Ukrainian) made from
buckwheat flour with yeast and eggs. I can now add that the verse (but
not the chorus) is also almost identical to another Ukrainian song, "Did
rudyi, baba ruda" (Grandpa's Red-headed, Grandma's Red-headed), which is
included in vol. 2 of the _Botsford Collection of Folk-Songs_ (New
York: Schirmer, 1950) under the title "The Red-Headed Family."
