There is a section on Yiddish riddle songs in Ruth Rubin's book Voices of
a People, pp. 91-94. Riddle songs are common in many cultures. Rubin
says, "Another type of love song, cast in the form of a riddle, served as
a courtship procedure long ago. On occasion, riddles were also performed
as part of the entertainment at weddings. One such beautiful riddle is
preserved in the Bible: 'What is sweeter than honey / And what is
stronger than a lion?--Love' (Judges 14: 12-17)."
