Re: Mel Gibson, The New York Times and Jewish Music

This is why it is so important to support independent book and record sellers,
to tell Amazon.com and Barnes and Ignoble to piss off. I'm not going to get
into a long diatribe, I'm merely going to say two things:

1) The 'Net and e-mail lists like this one are tremendous resources for
building our own networks of sale and distribution -- small but vital
alternatives to the corporate megamonsters that control the marketplace;
2) We have an obligation of self-interest in supporting indie sellers, indie
producers, indie publishers and indie record labels.

Cry later, but for now let's enjoy the laughter.

Here's the post script. Since writing that note (which I sent as an
e-mail) I have not heard back from Mr. Rich, but I have heard from Ben Ratliff
from whom an e-mail arrived earlier this morning, he writes "thanks for the
album, which I do like. I have no plans at the moment for reviewing it at
this very moment . . ." So it would appear that the NYTimes continues to
do its best to maintain it's perfect record for reviewing new Jewish
recordings.

  Good try anyway...

A few years ago I also contacted the office of Jon Pareles, actually spoke
personally with him about reviewing the Klezical Tradition CD, and he said send
it, but no real hopes of finding space for a review. I sent it, of course, as
we all do in our stupid futility. A review obviously never happened.

But here's one for the books: My "FleytMuzik" CD is not carried in a major
west coast store because the cover "wouldn't sell." Ver veyst...ugly painting
of flutes?? How horrible...I guess. And so some of us don't even get the
support from those who you'd certainly expect to give a leg up.
What next? Where does it end?
