Re: The New York Times and Jewish Music

Jewish music is typically seen as either religious music, or ethnic music.
In that context, does the times review religious recordings from other
traditions? Outside of popular World Beat recordings, does it review
recordings of "ethnic" interest - Indian or African or American Indian, or
whatever?

In other words, is the New York Times not reviewing Jewish music because
Jewish music fits into a larger pigeonhole of items that do not appear, to
the Times, to be among "all the news fit to print," or is it just us?

Certainly raises a lot of issues about pigeonholing in general and trying
to get new Jewish music noticed outside the Jewish press. It is especially
frustrating because, perhaps more than is the case in other traditions,
"Jewish" doesn't equate exactly to one culture or one type of religious
expression (or any, necessarily).
