b'li neyder

It's actually the identical phrase in Hebrew as in Yiddish: "b'li neyder"
meaning "without promising". It's normally used only in conjunction with a
statement of future intent, hence it is a little, but not exactly, like
"don't make me swear to it."

...which is the setup to appreciating Joe Lieberman's bon mot when asked if he
thought he was going to win the election: "B'li Nader" (i.e. without Ralph
Nader's siphoning off potential Democratic voters).

Groan.
