> BOSTON-On November 20, Israel Adler, an internationally renowned scholar
of
> Jewish music, will present a lecture and film on the recently discovered
> oratorio Ester (1774). The oratorio-lost for 220 years-is one of the most
> extensive and richly scored works of Hebrew art music from the 17th and
18th
> centuries. Sponsored by the Boston University College of Fine Arts, the
> lecture and screening will be held at the University's George Sherman
Union
> Conference Auditorium, beginning at 7p.m. Boston University Professor
Elie
> Wiesel will introduce Professor Adler.
>
> Adler's lecture recounts the inspiring discovery of Ester. The film
> documents the premiere performance of the oratorio on May 31, 2000 in
> Jerusalem and features the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra, the Tel Aviv
> Collegium Choir, and members of the Moran Girls Choir, conducted by Avner
> Itai.
>
> Ester or Teschuat Yisreal al yedey Ester (The Salvation of Israel by
> Esther), written by Christiano Giuseppe Lidarti (b 1730; d? 1793), an
> Austrian composer of Italian descent, is structured in three acts, each
> containing three to four scenes. It is scored for the soloist portraying
> the roles of Ester (soprano), Donna Israelita (soprano), Ahasverus
(tenor),
> Mordecai (tenor), and Haman (baritone), a three-part choir, and an
orchestra
> consisting of strings, flutes, horns, oboes, and basso-continuo.
>
> Lidarti, a Christian, was one of the two main composers during the 18th
> century who left their imprint on the musical repertory of the Portuguese
> Jewish community in Amsterdam. Ester is the most impressive work among
his
> Hebrew compositions.
>
> The libretto for Ester was written by Rabbi Jacob Raphael Saraval of
Mantua
> and Venice (b? 1707; d 1782). The text is a well-crafted, loose Hebrew
> adaptation of the English libretto for Handel's oratorio Esther (1732).
>
> The manuscript's whereabouts were unknown until 1997, when it was
discovered
> and acquired for the University of Cambridge Library by its head of music,
> Richard Andrewes. The work was brought to Adler's attention in 1998.
>
> Israel Adler is the founder of the Jewish Music Research Centre
at
> the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he is also professor emeritus
in
> musicology. In 1984, he received the "Kavod" Award from the United States
> Cantors Assembly. From 1991 to 1997, he was a member of UNESCO's
> International Music Council Executive Committee, and in 1997 was elected
to
> the Board of Directors of the International Musicological Society. Adler
> visited Boston University in 1997 when he gave a talk entitled, "Survivors
> of the Babi-Yar of Jewish Musical Memory," in which he discussed the
> uncovering of a collection of Jewish folklore-including recordings of 1000
> popular songs-in the former Soviet Union.
