There are, indeed, two Jewish songs beginning with the words "Eli, Eli."
It would have been an anachronism for Judy Garland to sing the one with
words by Hannah Shenesh, and also for her to have lip-synched it. The
other song, the one with which she could have had contact, is decades
older, but comparably written after a pogrom. But it's an extraordinary
enough story as it is. And to confuse the subject further, Jesus' famous
seven last words from the cross also begin "Eli, Eli" - "Father forgive
them for they know not what they do." (I guess it's 7 words in the
original Aramaic.)
