upcoming dance workshop

Shana Tovah and Gut Yontif to everybody.

Just wanted to let you know about an upcoming workshop I'll be doing at
Folklore Village, near Madison Wisconsin on Sept 27-29.

Steve Weintraub is a nationally recognized authority on authentic Eastern
European dance and has a special gift for sharing the style, flavor, steps and
figures of the Klezmer tradition. Born on Governor's Island and Bar Mitzvahed
in the Bronx, Steve received his dance training in Manhattan with Alvin Ailey
and Erick Hawkins.

This year Steve will take us back to turn of the century New York where Jewish
greenhorns from all over eastern Europe were mixing with their more assimilated
Lantsmen, and tunes from the old country were mixing with music from the
flourishing Yiddish Theater. Workshops and culture sessions will lead up to a
recreation of a wedding from New York's Lower East Side circa 1908.

Participants will learn the Philadelphia Sher (square dance),the couples'
Bulgar, Steve's grandparent's Czardas (Hungarian couple dance), Litvak style
dancing, Freylach, Honga and the original Flashtanz (bottle dance).

Yid Vicious, Wisconsin's premier Klezmer ensemble, is not especially vicious,
but they do play a mean freylekh. Band members Daithi Wolfe (fiddle), Mike
Pollay (guitar), Jon Pollack (percussion), Kia Karlen (French horn), Greg Smith
(clarinet) and Melissa Reiser (sax) fuse a strong traditional brand of Klezmer
with their individual music backgrounds, keeping in tradition with Klezmer's
evolving history. Yid Vicious will provide the music for dances and lead music
workshops.
