I think Molly Picon's disguise is in keeping with traditional "pant's
roles". One is not supposed to believe in it, it's just a convention, an
indication on the plot.
On a deeper level, it talks about genders, and if everybody thinks she is a
boy, a boy she is.
Something like that.
Also, she probably would not have wanted,as an actress, to totally be
changed and made up to look like a boy....
