Re the inquiries a couple of weeks ago about the
re-released album "Terry Gibbs Plays Jewish
Melodies In Jazztime":
This is from a recent bulletin of Universal
Music Canada reissues...so it's the company's
description, not mine.
Release date [in Canada]: August 20, 2002.
Just the Facts: Decades before the fusion of
jazz and klezmer music was fashionable,
vibraphonist Terry Gibbs was putting a modern-
jazz spin on traditional Jewish melodies and
rhythms. The group heard on this ahead-of-its-
time album includes Alice McLeod, later known as
Alice Coltrane, on piano.
Personnel: Terry Gibbs (vibraphone, marimba)
together with Sam Kutchner (trombone), Ray
Musiker (clarinet), Alan Logan, Alice McLeod
(aka Alice Coltrane) (piano), Herman Wright
(bass), Bobby Pike (drums), Sol Gage (drums,
marimba). Recorded 1963 in New York City.
Tracks: 1. Bei Mir Bist Du Schon; 2. Papirossen
(Cigarettes); 3. Kazochok (Russian Dance); 4.
Vuloch (A Folk Dance); 5. My Yiddishe Momme; 6.
And the Angels Sing; 7. S&S; 8. Shaine Une Zees
(Pretty and Sweet); 9. Nyah Shere (New Dance).
Hope this helps!
