An Autoharp is a chorded zither. Most are 36 strings with a set of bars
perpendicular to the strings that, when depressed, mute all the strings not
part of the selected chord. Mine has 21 chords.
It is strummed, or pinch-plucked.
It was originally designed to be played only as chorded accompaniment, and
was sold in schools a lot, but a many methods of picking melodies have been
developed.
More info at www.autoharp.org and www.autoharp.info.
