I won't say it's the best - but what I do is play the record
once to knock dirt out of the grooves, then give it a gentle wipe
following the grooves with a soft towel dripping with lukewarm 
water and dish liquid, followed by a rinse and air dry.  

I don't think I've ever made anything worse that way.
