But in this scientific age, how do we decide. In the shtetl, the Rabbi
knew, but in America today the Rabbi has a hard enough job knowing which
congregation members are Jewish. Our shul had a debate about changing its
By-Laws that specify that a member must be a Jew. The rule was probably
ignored from the day it was written. During the debate, one member pointed
out that his mother was on the Board, and she was a Christian who never
converted.
The rabbis can't even agree on what is kosher, aside from the obvious.
Boy, am I opening a Pandora's box. (Did Pandora have a counterpart in
Jewish legends). Isn't this more interesting than debating what is Jewish
music? Well, maybe not, but it helps to pass a gray winter day.

Marvin, the study you mention of the Cohen gene is exactly what made me
think of this.

In America, we have mainly an honor system on this, and many folks have no

If you have the recently-identified Cohen gene, that is what you are. If
you can sing really well, you may be a Levite - but that hasn't been
scientifically studied yet. Does some scholar want to apply for a grant
(not from me!)?

You know the story of the man who wanted to be a Cohen, don't you?

Dear Lorele,Well, the Levis will come out of the woodwork for this one. But
yes, my grandfather was a Levi and a Cantor, my father was a
violinist/conductor/music educator and was a Levi. I am a composer/arranger,
conductor, and record producer and am a Levi as well, I would guess.Best

I was wondering that if a study were done of Levi, would there be a
preponderance of musical talents? How many of you out there are Levi? How
many not? Let's hear from youand take an informal poll.I don't know what my

though), so we claim Yisroel.Lorele
