Those paintings are indeed based on a historical interpretation, that is
totally erroneous by today's standards. But that *alone* certainly does
not invalidate the painting as a work of art.

Just imagine someone would claim that the writings of Aristotle are
invalid as works of philosophy, just because they are based on the
erroneous historical assumption that everything consists of some
combination of Fire, Air, Water or Earth?

Erroneous assumptions and interpretations, however regrettable they are,
can play an important role in cultural history.
