I read a very cute story which Eydie Gorme contributed to a book called
Celebrity Kosher Cookbook, "At the Captain's Table".
When Steve and I went on tour to Europe, we took my mother. We booked
first-class passage on the Queen Mary; outside cabins, dinner at the captain's
table, the best-placed deck chairs, the works.
At dinner our first night out, there was great pomp and circumstance, with a
display of waiters and busboys catering to our every wish. In the midst of
this gala array of English hospitality, my mother started to laugh. At first
the laughter was subdued, but it escalated with every royal gesture shown by
our hosts. Soon her laughter became contagious, and everyone at the table
joined in although I must admit Steve's and mine was more nervous than joyful.
Finally, when someone asked, "Why are you laughing?" she answered with tears
streaming down her cheeks: "I'm sorry, I was comparing this to a previous
crossing--when I came steerage on a freighter from Turkey. And you know
something? This way's better. Pass the caviar."
So now you know where she came from!
