Crossroads, which brings together an outstanding group of vocalists
and instrumentalists in a unique exploration of musical traditions
spanning the Jewish, Turkish and Arabic worlds, performs at 7 p.m.
Sunday, July 15 at Christ Church Cathedral(!) in Vancouver, British
Columbia.
>From Sufi mystical poetry set to music to Ashkenazi and Sephardi
tunes to pieces based on classical Arabic tunes, the repertoire is
diverse, but reveals common themes. The performers combine knowledge
and love of the traditions with improvisational brilliance to create
a magical blend of old and new, familiar and novel.
Transcending geographical and political boundaries, Crossroads seeks
the universality of musical experience.
Featured in Crossroads are vocalists Nancy (Nur-Jehan) Fischer and
Alisa Kort, singing their own repertoire and collaborating in cross-
cultural performance. Instrumentalists Wendy Bross Stuart (piano and
shamisen), Andre Thibault (strings and percussion) and Ron Stelting
(percussion) accompany the singers and create their own changing
ensembles.
Christ Church Cathedral is at 690 Burrard Street; tickets ($15) are
available at the door. For more information, phone the West Coast
