african shabbat/abayudaya jews of uganda

Khaverim,

For those of you who were wondering (and there must be thousands, if not
millions), African Shabbat at U of MN Hillel last night was a major success.
The place was completely packed, more congregants than for Rosh Hashonah.

More important though, I want to recommend a cd that was being sold (not on
shabes) by our visiting scholar, Jay Sand. It's 'Shalom Everybody Everywhere,
introducing the Abayudaya Jews of Uganda,' featuring the Kohavim Tikvah Choir.
It's too wonderful for words, and the words are in Luganda, Swahili, Hebrew, and
English. You can get it for $15 & $2 postage per copy by sending a check to
"Kulanu," c/o Hantman, 3520 Tarkington Lane, Silver Spring, MD 20906. My
understanding is that all the proceeds go to the Abayudaya.

Jay told me that one of their leaders, Rabbi Gershom Sizomu, who's also a
musician, is coming to the States soon. I'm hoping to get him to MN for
performances with my band. Best to get him here before August when it starts
cooling off (although it only really gets warm at the end of July).
