African Shabbat

If you happen to be in the Twin Cities April 26-28, U of M Hillel is presenting
"The Jews of Africa," a symposium featuring scholar Jay Sand. The Friday
evening service will feature my African Shabbat, with the Macalester College
African Ensemble, Sowah Mensah, director, and vocalists from Macalester, the U
of M, and the community at large, under the direction of Keith McCutchen of the
U of M Jazz Singers. I'll be playing guitar on a few of the pieces. It'll be
heys (hot).

If you make a reservation, you can partake in a free African vegetarian kosher
meal after the service. Hillel is at 1521 University Ave. SE in Minneapolis.

On a personal note, I was just unanimously elected to the U of M's Jewish
Studies faculty, a program among whose achievements is the U of M's first Rhodes
scholar in many years. I'm pretty happy about this and thought I'd share.

Git shabes,
