Re: speaking of low status2

And here?s another good one:
http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/khorostkov/2.html
KHOROSTKOV
(UKRAINE)
49°14'N / 25°55'E

It was part of the marriage tradition in those days that, at the height of
the festivities on the evening of the wedding day, the bridegroom's friends
would seize hold of him and his bride, take them off to a room somewhere
where a bed had been prepared, and lock them in, so that they could fulfil
the first Mitzvah in the Torah. My wedding was no exception. Adela and I
were taken to a cold, dark corner of the cellar and locked in. Remember,
this was the beginning of March, and the temperature was 20 below. There
was, of course, no heating in the cellar. My girl bride, her teeth
chattering, wrapped herself in blankets and sat on the edge of the bed. I
did the same and sat down beside her, and there we stayed until our
"kidnappers" came and released us in the morning.

According to this old Yizkor book, they still got married outside in the
snow:
http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/goniadz/gon475.html
Our hometown Goniondz
(Poland)
53°23' / 22°45'
.
In snowy winter weather, the wedding canopy would be set up near the House
of Study (Beys Hamedresh), and friends of the couple, very often, would
throw snowballs at them. Led by the in-laws, from both sides, the whole
shtetl would accompany the bride and bridegroom to the wedding place with an
atmosphere as if the entire shtetl were their friends. The main "in-laws"
were children of many ages, who moved forward in front of the band of
musicians, very excitedly, keeping pace with the rhythm of the music.
There's a wedding in shtetl, joy and gladness to the Jewish world
Helen

Was there work for klezmorim during the cold winter months?

Look at Old Country klez photos and paintings. Have you noticed how they
are mostly out-of-doors scenes. It's always summertime in the 19th Century.

Yes, I know the chuppah-under-the-stars is the preferred way to go.

Update: not too many folks nowadays get married in the winter in Cleveland
either, but on a limited basis the bar mitzvah bashes (nonexistent in
Europe) keep rolling along.

So what did the old-time klezmorim do in the winter? Cut hair?
