I used to not like them (the Kabalas) very much, but Gideon Aronoff looked
me in the eye one night after a Klezmatics concert and told me they really
were deserving of another chance, and I went back and re-listened, and by
gum he was right!
Their stuff grows on you (insert stupid moss jokes here), and I'll admit
that my children were equally responsible for getting me to like their stuff
(whatever that might suggest about it or its childishness).
But I think there's some pretty sophisticated cross-cultural jokes going on,
musically and otherwise, in their work. If you take it on its own terms, and
if you grow used to the vocals (which took some getting used to for me),
indeed they can be a genuine hoot. Has anyone seen them live?
