RE: JMI Jewish Music Catalogue System

A big thank you to all those who offered a name for the JMI Music Catalogue
System. The
name we like best is 'Keynote'. This seems to strike all the right chords.
(runner-ups
were Solo. Felix, Tutti, and Kinnor. We chose an English name as this system is
suitable for all music collections, but the first edition off the press will be
the
Jewish Music Edition. So it will be 'Keynote' JMI Music Catalogue System,
Jewish
Edition.
The system is being tried out right now. It is really fantastic.
There are five main windows, Titles (of songs with place to deal with the music
and the
text), media (ie book, CD, Mss), collections, artists and ensembles
All these windows are connected and within each there are all the relevant
fields. In
addition, In each window, there will be some default categories and
subcategories but
more can be added or subtracted according to the particular users needs. You
can scan
in pictures, of the Recording, book or the artists and ensembles. Each window
also has
a 'notes' area where any notes can be added with full word processing
capability. You
can print out reports of any parts of the holdings. In addition there is a
tune manager
where you can key in a tune and it can recognize it in any key or any part of
the song.
This can be supplied empty or with 100 best known tunes of Sephardi, Yiddish,
liturgical, Israeli (eventually) etc. It can also print translations and
transliterations and Hebrew font, with a Hebrew keyboard on screen, specially
designed
for English typers - ie the keys are sound-alike or look-alike so as not to
confuse
someone familiar with the normal keyboard.
We are now working on a utility to transfer any existing database on to this
system.
What would be really useful is, if anyone would like to give us a list of
categories and
subcategories suitable for cataloguing their own specialized collection of
Jewish
music. We are publishing lists suggested by various experts in the help files,
with the
name of the person who has offered that list. It would be good to publish eg
the Joel
Bresler list of categories for Sephardi music. (I have asked Joel if he would
like to
submit this) By category and subcategory I mean the names of the various
regions,
various dialects, various occasions that they might be used, (which may be
different
from occasions in other branches). You could give us about four or five main
categories
(or main subcategories of your collection) and between 20 and 100
subcategories. The
system can take many subcategories for each category. They can also be used in
a
keywords field on many windows.
I look forward to receiving your lists.

please
Possibly these specialist collections are not yet properly catalogued. I would
like to
tell list members that the cataloguing system specially for Jewish Music
(though it is
equally wonderful for any music) that has been developed by the Jewish Music
Institute
in London in consultation with the British Library, National Sound Archive, is
very
nearly ready. The urgency of its development, is so that all those who want to
catalogue a collection of Jewish music, can do it on the same database. It is
envisaged
that when all the specialist collections are catalogued the master catalogue
will be
posted on the internet, (with a code as to in which collection the item is
lodged). The
system is a user-friendly windows programme, with relational entries for titles,
composers, media (book, mss, CD wax cylinder etc), artists and ensembles. It
also has a
searchable tune manager and Hebrew font.
It will be known with the subtitle of the 'JMI Music Catalogue'. We are
looking for a
catchy name (in the same way as a music publishing programme is called
'Sibelius') Would
list members like to suggest a name?
First off the press will be the Jewish Music Edition. It will be equally
suitable for
other world music collections and general music collections and is suitable
both for
libraries and private collections. Could you also let me know if you will be
interested
to consider it for your collection?

Subject: Private Specialized Recordings Collections
The mention of the Chad Gadya collection made me realize that our
group members combined probably have a collection of Jewish Music
recordings that surpasses any collection in the world.
But I also believe that many of us have focused our efforts on
particular areas or themes. For example, one of my concentrations is
recordings on the story of Noah and the Flood.
>From our contributions I believe that our specialized collections
include the following:
Ari: klezmer
Christian: contemporary European klezmer
Eliott: liturgical choral?
George: especially jazz
Gideon: rock
Haim: Israeli folk dance
Hayyim: rock (Leonard Cohen)
Hankus: Yiddish
Helen: klezmer dance?
Henry: klezmer
Ingemar: jazz?
Itzik: Yiddish
Jerzy: Polish
Joe: ?
Joel: everything Ladino
Josh: Eastern European
Judah: early music
Judith: Ladino field recordings
Judy F.: ?
Judy P.: ?
Lori (either): ?
Marvin: ?
Matt: ?
Owen: ?
Paul: early klezmer
Reyzl: Shoah
Robert: contemporary liturgical
Seth: klezmer (+!)
Simon: everything?
Skip: ?
Trudi: ?
Winston: liturgical
Wolf: oddball
Please correct me if I've misrepresented you, annotate if I haven't.
I've pretty much just dashed this off, so I'm sure that I've left out
many. My apologies to you.
Please tell us of your special interest. Anyone for Israeli pop or
classical? Yiddish theater? Seder music?
