Klezfest 2000 - more shameless self-promotion

Temple Israel and Jewish Federation of the North Shore announce third annual
Klezfest

The North Shore's third annual Klezfest will be held on Sunday, April 2, 2000 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m, at Temple Beth El in Swampscott, Massachusetts (55 Atlantic Ave. approximately 40 minutes north of Boston). Klezfest 2000 will feature a sextet from the world-renowned Klezmer Conservatory Band, di bostoner klezmer, and the Klezmaniacs, the popular teenage klezmer band. The grand finale will include all the bands plus community youth and adult choirs including the Kenahoras, Zion Baptist Church, and First Church of Swampscott, and children from Hillel Academy and Temples Israel, Beth El, and Beth Shalom.

Klezfest 2000 will offer activities for children, including face-painting,
dance-leading by the North Suburban JCC Youth Israeli Folk Troupe and
refreshments from I.C. Macaw's kosher ice cream parlor.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at a discount at Temple Israel
(781-595-6635), Temple Beth El, Photographics in Vinnin Square, and the

Jewish Community Centers of Marblehead and Peabody. Pre-event ticket prices
are $8 for adults and $5 for students. Though Klezfest expects to sell out
in advance, prices at the door are $12 for adults and $6 for students.

Preschoolers are free of charge.

The Klezfest 2000 Bands At-a-Glance


The Klezmer Conservatory Band, recognized internationally, has
brought klezmer music to all regions of the globe through innumerable concerts and television broadcasts. They performed with Itzhak Perlman on the PBS special "In the Fiddler's House" and have toured with Mr. Perlman extensively. The band has 8 albumsin print (not including 2 with Perlman) and another on the way. Members of the KCB. were featured in an international broadcast of
America's salute to Israel on its 50th anniversary. A sextet of KCB members will perform at the concert, featuring the inimitable Ilene Stahl on clarinet, Betty Silberman on vocals, Jim Guttman on bass, and Grant Smith on percussion.

di bostoner klezmer has established itself as a hot new local klezmer ensemble. They have performed at the opening reception (with Elie Weisel) of an internationally touring a photo exposition called "And I Still See Their Faces: The Vanished World of Polish Jewry," at Israeli Independence Day, First Night Beverly and Boston's Museum of Science. Upcoming performances include March 26, live on Chagigah (WERS, 88.9 FM); they will join Terry Traub's ensemble at the New England Folk Festival on 4/16.Cantor Ken Richmond, who plays violin and sings with the group, has been playing klezmer since he founded the Yale Klezmer Band in 1992. Accordionist and singer Matthew Wulf, has directed musical shows around the country and composed music arrangements for Harvard's Hasty Pudding Theater. Trombonist Rachel Lemisch is the heir of a 200-year-old Yas-Philadelphian klezmer dynasty. Clarinetist Dena Ressler is a retailer of Jewish music through www.yiddishmusic.com; its extensive collection of klezmer and Yiddish song will be available at the concert.

The Klezmaniacs is a 10-member band of teenagers dedicated to preserving the
rollicking folk traditions of Jewish music and sharing their music with the
community. Since 1995, they have performed frequently at synagogues, schools,
nursing homes, Bar Mitzvahs, and other festive occasions. Highlights include
the Anti-Defamation League's Interfaith Seder, the Peabody Millenium Parade,
last year's Heads & Tales storytelling festival at Salem High School Upcoming performances include April 23 at Brown University's Klezmerpalooza. Their new CD, "Nokh A Mohl!" (Play It Again!) available nationally. The Klezmaniacs will be featured in a national PBS documentary being filmed this spring.





Klezfest 2000 is co-sponsored by Temple Israel in partnership with the Young
Leadership Division of the Jewish Federation of the North Shore. Additional
generous sponsorship is being provided by Temple Beth-El, Cohen Hillel

Academy, Temple Ahabat Sholom and Temple Ner Tamid.
