| I think I just answered my own question.  I went back
to the original text
| and it says:  "the dance was followed by the shaddach
[now we know its
| csardas] and then the polkovnik and the different
people put on the act of
| the cossacks."

| The grammar threw me as I thought they were talking
about the cossack dance
| as a separate entity from the polkovnik.  Maybe the
writer was actually
| describing the polkovnik.
|

Maybe the colonel of cossacks :)))
