Iraqi Jewish And Iraqi Music (CD)
Hakki Obadia
This recording by Hakki Obadia contains 3 Iraqi Passover songs and one Purim
songs."On this recording, Hakki Obadia performs music that is uniquely Iraqi
Jewish as well as shared repertoire between Jews and Arabs in Iraq. The
vocals are in Hebrew and Arabic. This we believe is the first full recording
documenting the Iraqi Jewish tradition."
The 21 selections on this CD, consist of instrumentals selections (oud and
violin) as well as vocals. Descriptive notations are included for each
selection.
Example: "Ala Balade el-Mahboob" (vocal and oud) - In the maquam bayat
and sung in Arabic. A well-known song of the 30s that had been sung by the
great Egyptian singer UM KALTHUM. It is said that the melody was one that
was sung by Egyptian Jews as a Pizmon, a religious poem set to music and sung
in the synagogue during services. The new words turned a religious melody
into a popular song.
Lyrics included phoneticaly and traslation.
