The Old Broadway Synagogue located on 125th St., one block east of
Broadway, is pleased to announce the first concert of its Upper Upper West
Side Jewish Music Series. The concert, entitled MASTERS OF THE YIDDISH ART
SONG, will feature baritone Robert Ableson, tenor Bernard Fitch, and piano
accompanist Mimi Stern-Wolfe. The concert will take place on Sunday, March
12th at 4:00 PM in Old Broadway's sanctuary. Admission is $10.00.
The Old Broadway Synagogue is the last affiliated Jewish congregation in
Harlem, which was once a vibrant Jewish community. This concert series is
sponsored in connection with Old Broadway's 75th anniversary, and presented
with the goal of revitalizing the shul and its congregation.
Cantor Robert Ableson has long been acknowledged as one of the world's
premiere interpreters of the Yiddish art song. A colleague of Yiddish art
song composer Lazar Weiner, Ableson premiered over twenty of Weiner's songs
during the 1960s and 70s. He has been a soloist with the New York City
Opera, the Dallas and Philadelphia Orchestras, and appeared on Broadway in
Those Were the Days. Cantor Ableson has officiated at Temple Israel of the
City of New York for over twenty years and also teaches at the Hebrew Union
College School of Sacred Music in New York City.
Tenor Bernard Fitch is currently a soloist with the Metropolitan Opera of
New York City. He has appeared on opera stages and sung with major
orchestras throughout the world. During the 1960s, he served as cantor at
the Raleigh Hotel in South Fallsburg, NY. A preeminent Yiddish art song
interpreter as well as colleague of Lazar Weiner, Fitch sang the lead in
Weiner's oratorio, The Golem.
