Re: Jewish folk dances

One of the best sources on Jewish ethnic dance is Ayalah Goren, from the
Rubin Academy for Music and Dance in Jerusalem. Her mother, Gurit Kadman,
was responsible for helping the various Jewish ethnic groups (especially
Kurdish and Yemenite) preserve their dance in Israel -- she was also the
"mother" of the Israeli folkdance movement. Gurit wrote several books on
dance in Hebrew (e.g., Am Roked and a book on Kurdish dance). For her
contributions to Jewish dance, Gurit was honored with the Israel Prize,
the most prestigios award of the Jewish State. In any case, Ayalah has
continued her important work. SHe is currently in New York doing
workshops for our weekly Rikuday Dor Rishon dance session. If you wish to
contact her, please contact me off-list.

A major source on the history of Jewish dance is Dr. Zvi Friedhaber, who
has written numerous books and articles on the subject (in Hebrew). He
has the lagest archive in the world on Jewish and Israeli folk dance. If
you want to contact him, I could put you in touch. I am not sure how well
he speaks English, but he does speak German as well as Hebrew. Let me know.
