Hi Lorele, 

I'm sure that there are many here who know a lot more about Gelbart than I do 
(and some who knew him personally), but I might recommend, if you read 
Yiddish, getting hold of his memoir, "Fun Meshorerim Lebn," 1942, Farlag M.S. 
Sklarsky, New York.  I haven't read the whole book, but I have read parts, 
and they were interesting.
