Unknown Klezmatics CD: The Shvitz

Well, at least the qualities of this CD were completely unknown to me. To those
of you who like the Klezmatics' music and never listened to this CD, I would
like to draw your attention to this CD. I just bought it on chance, because so
far I liked everything that Frank London's contributed to.

To be perfectly correct, this is a Frank London CD, but all current members of
the Klezmatics (except for Paul Morrissett) are playing on it, and they have a
bunch of other interesting musicians to their help: Greg Wall, saxofonist of
the Hasidic New Wave and well-known guitarist Marc Ribot, just to name a few.

It was released in 1993, but you couldn't tell it's six years old. It sounds
very modern. Lorin Sklamberg is even rapping in Yiddish on one track! Some
tracks would fit in into Hasidic New Wave's music. Take the plaintive version
of Vus vet zayn or the tougher Verastikh Li, for example. Alicia Svigal's
fine-tuned violin playing is the center of Full Moon, Ancient Waters and
Kolomeyke. And so on. You' ll love it, and you'll be delighted by discovering a
Klezmatics CD you did'nt even know it existed.

Ari has a review of it at
